What to see and do in Mollet del Vallès

Mollet del Vallès
Village
Mollet del Vallès is an industrial city in the southwest of the Vallès Oriental comarca, on the banks of the Besòs, 10 kilometres from Granollers and 25 from Barcelona. The Caganell stream crosses the municipality until it meets the Besòs, in a plain rich in water. In April 2009 a Neolithic menhir almost five metres tall and weighing six tonnes was found, one of the most important archaeological finds in Catalonia; beside it once stood two other megalithic monuments now lost, the Piedra Salvadora and the Piedra de Gallicant. Excavations in 2023-2024 next to the church of Sant Vicenç uncovered silos, skeletons and Roman tombs that would push back its known origins by around 500 years. The earliest documentary references date from the year 993.
Church of Mollet del Vallès
Monument
The church of Sant Vicenç is the parish church of Mollet del Vallès, on Carrer d'Espanya, within the comarca of the Vallès Oriental (Barcelona). The previous temple, Gothic in style and decorated in 1530 with altarpieces by the sculptor Martí Díez de Liatzasolo, was destroyed in 1936, except for the bell. The present building was erected after the war to the design of the architect Francesc Folguera, with red brick walls, a basilica plan of three naves — the central one wider, on round arches — and a square-tower bell tower topped with windows and clocks. Inside are preserved paintings by Joaquim Mir, Jaume Busquets i Mollera and Joan Abelló, and sculptures by Manel Martí i Cabré and Francesc Juventeny. It is listed as bien cultural de interés local (a municipal-level heritage protection designation).
Mollet del Vallès Main Festival
Activity
Mollet del Vallès celebrates two festas majors: the winter one, of Sant Vicenç -patron of the parish documented since 1044-, around January 22, and the summer one, the Sunday following the Assumption on August 15.
Museu Abelló
Monument
It opened in 1999 to house the collection of the painter Joan Abelló (1922-2008), born in the city, who gathered his own work and that of other artists along with objects brought from his travels. It is today the municipality's main museum facility.
Bell tower of the old church of Sant Vicenç
Historical milestone
The Gothic parish church of Sant Vicenç was built in 1498 and was destroyed in 1936, at the beginning of the Civil War. Only the base of the bell tower is preserved, incorporated into the later parish complex, as a testimony of the town's old centre.
