What to see and do in Sant Pere de Torelló

Sant Pere de Torelló
Village
Sant Pere de Torelló is a municipality in northern Osona, in the Vall del Ges, on the boundary with the Garrotxa comarca, which also includes the settlement of Sant Andreu de la Vola and preserves the castles of Curull and Vilar. It has 2596 inhabitants. In 1937 it took the name Bellserrat, and in 1930 it absorbed the settlements of la Vola and Les Masies de Sant Pere de Torelló. On 3 September 2012 its town council passed a motion in favor of Catalan independence, proclaiming itself free Catalan territory, in a gesture urging the Catalan Government and Parliament to assume sovereignty over the territory. Its heritage includes the sanctuary of Our Lady of Bellmunt, the hermitage of San Roque, the Molino de Salgueda bridge and the Grevolosa forest.
Castle of Curull
Monument
Of the castle of Curull, originating in the eleventh century and declared a cultural asset of national interest, scant ruins remain on the summit of the serra de Curull, in the spot called Puig de les Àligues, in the municipality of Sant Pere de Torelló; in the early twentieth century remains of what may have been a tower and some steps could still be made out, today very worn down and covered by vegetation. It appears documented for the first time in 1020-1021, in the will of the count of Besalú, Bernat Tallaferro, and it was enfeoffed by the counts of Barcelona to the Besora family and later to the Montcada family. In the early fourteenth century it passed to the Milany family, who sold it in 1373 to Roger de Malla, and in 1563 its assets passed to the Cartellà family.
Castle of Vilar
Monument
Fortified strong house, popularly known as Castell de la Vinyeta, situated in the vall del Ges, in the municipality of Sant Pere de Torelló. Documented since 1193, it was the residence of the lords of Curull and is declared a cultural asset of national interest. Quadrangular in plan, it preserves a large fifteenth-century Gothic window divided by a mullion, while the oldest part rests on the bedrock visible at the base of the building. The entrance door, with a large flat lintel, is topped by the stone-carved coat of arms of the marquises of Cartellà. In the modern era several sections were added that transformed the building into a farmhouse; it is currently abandoned and in ruins.
