What to see and do in Sant Quirze de Besora

Sant Quirze de Besora
Village
Sant Quirze de Besora, at 587 meters above sea level in the Osona comarca, borders the Ripollès and lies in the Bisaura sub-comarca, on the banks of the Ter river; it is the largest town in that sub-comarca, with 2,164 inhabitants. Its origins go back to the resettlement carried out by Wilfred the Hairy, and its parish church, rebuilt in the eighteenth century, is already documented in the year 898, when Count Wilfred the Hairy gave it to the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses. Countess Ermessenda of Carcassonne, considered the most powerful woman in Catalan history, resided there for a time and died on 1 March 1058 in a house beside the church. Since the year 1800 the making of ratafia has been a tradition in the village, and its main festival is held from 16 to 19 June.
