What to see and do in Tavertet

Tavertet
Village
Tavertet is a municipality in the Osona comarca, in the south of the Collsacabra sub-comarca, set on a crag beside a great precipice with views over the Sau and Susqueda reservoirs and, in the distance, the mountains of the Montseny. It has 128 inhabitants (INE 2025). The town center, with about forty stone houses built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries in the traditional rural style of central Catalonia, has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) by the Generalitat. Above the village stands La Torre, whose shape recalls medieval defensive towers. The climate, typical of humid Catalonia, brings annual rainfall that today ranges around 800-900 millimeters, with mild summers and harsh, lightly snowy winters.
Reservoir of Sau
Nature
The pantà de Sau is a reservoir on the river Ter created by a dam located in the municipality of Vilanova de Sau, at the foot of the Guilleries range, which also extends into the municipalities of Les Masies de Roda, Tavertet and l'Esquirol, in the comarca of Osona. Together with the Susqueda and Pasteral reservoirs, it regulates the Ter to supply water to the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Girona and the Costa Brava, besides generating hydroelectric power. It was planned in 1931 and built between 1947 and 1963, submerging the old village of Sant Romà de Sau, whose 11th-century Romanesque bell tower, recorded as the oldest submerged church in the world still standing, emerges when the water level drops.
Guilleries
Nature
The Guilleries massif forms the Transversal mountain range, in north-eastern Catalonia, straddling the comarques of Osona and la Selva, with access from the Collsacabra sub-comarca, where Tavertet is located. It is crossed by the river Ter, which forms the Sau and Susqueda reservoirs here, and its highest point is Sant Miquel de Solterra, at 1,204 metres. Granitic in nature, it borders the Vic plain to the west and the Hostoles plains to the east; at higher elevations beech and oak woods grow, and in the lower areas, Mediterranean-type holm oak woods, today altered by crops and chestnut groves. The name Guilleries is relatively recent, dating from the 18th century; before that it was known as the «mountain of Osona», a name already documented in the 10th century.
Cliffs of Tavertet
Nature
The cingles de Tavertet are the limestone cliffs that overlook the pantà de Sau from the village of Tavertet (Osona, Barcelona), on the boundary between the Collsacabra comarca, to the north, and the Guilleries, to the south. The torrents that come down from the Collsacabra, on reaching the edge of the cliffs, plunge into the void forming notable waterfalls, including those of Noguer, Molí Bernat, Cua de Cavall and Salt del Sallent, which can be seen from several viewpoints and hiking routes that run along the escarpment.
Old Village of Sant Romà de Sau
Curiosity
Former settlement in the municipality of Tavertet (Osona), with origins dating back to the 10th century. It reached 1,138 inhabitants in 1857, though by the time it was abandoned barely 300 remained. In 1962 it was flooded beneath the waters of the pantà de Sau, along with two textile colonies, several farmhouses and a medieval bridge from the late 14th century, with five arches, considered the most notable on the course of the river Ter. The residents were relocated in 1951 to the new settlement of Mas de l'Arbós, after their land was expropriated. Of the original village, what stands out today is the old, half-ruined church, which emerges from the water in times of drought and has become a tourist attraction when the reservoir's level drops enough.
