What to see and do in Rupit i Pruit

Rupit i Pruit
Village
Rupit i Pruit is a medieval town in the Osona comarca, in the Collsacabra, beside the Cabrera mountain range, formed from the former independent settlements of Rupit and Pruit, united into a single municipality in 1977. The church and castle of Sant Joan de Fàbregues are documented from the year 968, and around the twelfth century the village of Rupit itself arose, with stone streets and houses of medieval origin, known for its hanging bridge. Nearby is the Salt de Sallent, the highest waterfall in Catalonia. It also preserves the Romanesque churches of Sant Llorenç Dosmunts, Sant Andreu de Pruit and Sant Miquel de Rupit. Its economy, once based on dry farming and livestock, now depends chiefly on tourism. It has 280 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Rupit
Monument
Castle situated in the middle of the village of Rupit, on an irregular crag behind the parish church, an eleventh-century successor to the castle of Fàbregues, documented since 968. After its abandonment, the castle of Rupit is documented under its own name from 1040. It belonged to the viscounts of Cardona, to the counts of Pallars and to the Cruïlles family, related to the marquises of Risbourg; in 1681 Charles II honoured Antonio de Bournonville as marquis of Rupit, a title that later passed to the counts of Aranda. It survived the fifteenth-century Catalan civil war, but it is not known when it was lost. The houses of the village were built around it, which today prevents access to its remains, reduced to courses of wall within a perimeter of about 300 square metres.
Collsacabra
Nature
The Collsacabra, also called Cabrerès, is a natural comarca of 142 km² situated between Osona, la Garrotxa and la Selva, bordered by the Vic plain to the west, the Sau valley and the Guilleries to the south, and the Bas valley to the east. Geomorphologically it is a plateau of the Transversal mountain range, with cliffs carved by the erosion of the Ter at Tavertet and el Far, an average altitude of 1,100 metres and its highest point at the Serra de Cabrera, at 1,307.7 metres. It is a wooded, damp area of beech woods, roure martinenc oak woods with box, and bruguerola heathland, with an economy traditionally based on farming and livestock that today is also turning to services. Rupit was, from the Middle Ages, the most important settlement in the Collsacabra, a role now held by l'Esquirol.
Waterfall of Sallent
Nature
The salt de Sallent, on the Rupit stream, within the municipality of Rupit i Pruit, in Osona, is the waterfall with the greatest vertical drop in Catalonia, at about 115 metres over several successive falls; in rainy periods it is impressive less for its height than for the volume of water it carries down to the pool at its base. The Rupit stream, a tributary of the Ter, rises in the Collsacabra range and, after crossing the village of Rupit and the Rodó and Pomareda waterfalls, plunges almost vertically, separating the Collsacabra from the Guilleries, in a two-stage descent of about 50 metres each, much frequented by canyoners. Below the falls forms the Gorga del Diable (Devil's Pool), on the way to the Susqueda reservoir. It is reached from Rupit, under the 1945 suspension bridge.
