What to see and do in l'Esquirol

L'Esquirol
Village
L'Esquirol, officially Santa María de Corcó, is a municipality in the Osona comarca, in the Collsacabra, with the castles of Cabrera and Barrès. It includes the settlements of San Martín Sescorts, San Julián de Cabrera and Cantonigrós, and has 2,301 inhabitants. Its church of San Martín Sescorts is documented since 934, that of Santa María de Corcó since 952. The current name comes from an inn that had a squirrel as its mascot; from it derived, after the episode of the local strikebreakers of 1902, the Catalan term esquirol (strikebreaker). The parish church, destroyed in the civil war, was rebuilt from 1940 onward, and the Romanesque churches of San Martín de Sescorts and San Julián de Cabrera and the Romanesque bridge of l'Esquirol are also preserved.
Castle of Cabrera
Monument
The castle of Cabrera, from the 12th-13th centuries and today reduced to scant ruins, stood near the summit of Mount Cabrera, 1,308 metres high, on the boundary between l'Esquirol, in Osona, and the Vall d'en Bas, in Garrotxa; it is the highest peak of the Serra de Cabrera. Very close by also stands the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de Cabrera. The castle, the origin of the important feudal lineage of the Cabrera family, is already documented in the year 940, and in 952 the church of Santa María de Corcó is also mentioned, the nucleus of present-day l'Esquirol; the church of Sant Julià de Cabrera has been known since the early 11th century.
Castle of Barrès
Monument
A 13th-century castle in the district of l'Esquirol (Osona), declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), of which only the base of a tower and a wall survive, covered by vegetation, along with rubble remains of stone and tile. Documented since 1106, it was dependent on the viscounts of Cabrera and defended the sector of the parish of Santa Maria de Corcó. It was destroyed in 1302 during the conflict between James II of Aragon and the count of Empúries, Ponç Hug IV, who was married to the viscountess of Cabrera; its reconstruction was authorised in 1313, though by 1589 no one any longer remembered having seen it standing.
