What to see and do in Vidrà

Vidrà
Village
Northernmost municipality of the comarca of Osona, within the province of Girona and wedged between the Ripollès and the Garrotxa. The village is at 982 m of altitude and the river Ges rises in its 34 km² of mountainous terrain; it has around 167 inhabitants.
Church of Sant Hilari
Monument
Parish church whose act of consecration, of 19 April 960, links it to bishop Ató of Vic and to abbess Ranlo of Sant Joan de les Abadesses. It was rebuilt from 1780 with designs by the Morató brothers and its Romanesque altar frontal is in the Museu Episcopal de Vic.
El Cavaller de Vidrà
Monument
Manor house of the municipal district, in the hands of the Cavaller family since the 13th century and afterwards of the Vila d'Abadal. In 1771 Francesc Vila Cavaller commissioned a new building from a French architect, finished in 1787, with a gallery and a chapel dedicated to the Mare de Déu de la Mercè.
Santa Margarida de Cabagès
Monument
Romanesque chapel of the municipal district, documented since 1123 and restored in 1978. It is a simple rural construction, of the same group of small churches as the church of Sant Bartomeu de Covildases, the latter with Lombard arcading on its chevet.
Waterfall of el Molí
Nature
Waterfall of some twenty metres of drop, the most striking feature of the river network of the municipal district. The whole municipality lies within the protected space of the Serres de Milany-Santa Magdalena i Puigsacalm-Bellmunt, incorporated into the PEIN by decree in 1992.
Oak of the Creu de l'Arç
Nature
Downy oak declared a tree of local interest in 1991 and a monumental tree of Catalonia in 1997. It measures 18 metres in height and the perimeter of its trunk reaches 4.20 metres, with a very spreading crown. It owes its name to the site of the Creu de l'Arç.
Vidrà Main Festival
Activity
The festa major of the town is held on the fourth Sunday of September and concentrates the popular events of the year. The patron, sant Hilari, has his day on 13 January, with the winter celebration; the local calendar also includes the Caminada del Vidranès.
From the Ripollès to Osona
Curiosity
Until the reform of the comarcal division of 1989 the municipality did not belong to Osona but to the Ripollès. Its other singularity is the demographic emptying: from the 740 inhabitants recorded in 1837 it fell to 163 in 2001, a decline of more than seventy-five per cent.
The Milany castle
Monument
The place name Milany appears in 918 and the fortress is cited for the first time in 962. It passed through the counties of Osona and Besalú and through the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses; damaged by the earthquakes of the 15th century, it was taken by the remences in 1462 and was left abandoned.
The stuffed potatoes
Food and drink
Potatoes hollowed out and filled with minced meat are the dish most identified with the inns of the town, where they have been served for generations. The local cooking rests on the beef and pork raised in the municipal district itself and, in autumn, on wild mushrooms.
