What to see and do in Santa Maria de Besora

Santa Maria de Besora
Village
Santa Maria de Besora is a small municipality in northern Osona, in the Bisaura sub-comarca, in the center of the Alt Ter region, at 866 meters above sea level between Sant Quirze de Besora and Vidrà. It has 164 inhabitants (INE 2025), with population records since 1497, and lives from dry farming and livestock. Its church, of Romanesque origin, is documented from 875, when Count Wilfred the Hairy gave it to the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses; the present-day town center, the Pla de Teia, was built in the mid-eighteenth century around a new church. It preserves the ruins of Besora Castle, mentioned in the early tenth century and dynamited in 1838 during the First Carlist War, and it is today a rural tourism destination thanks to places such as the Salt del Mir.
