What to see and do in Vilassar de Dalt

Vilassar de Dalt
Village
Vilassar de Dalt is a municipality in the Maresme, in the province of Barcelona, whose name comes from the Latin Villa Azari and is first documented in the year 978. Its castle, a Cultural Asset of National Interest declared a historical-artistic monument in 1931, rises 142 metres above sea level in the town centre, with four crenellated towers and a central circular tower probably from the 10th to 12th centuries, although its first documentary mention dates from 1262; it holds one of the best private historical archives in Catalonia, with more than 8,000 parchments and 70 manuscripts, and has passed through families such as the Desbosc, the Oms, the Copons and the Sarriera. The municipality also preserves prehistoric sites, such as the dolmen of the roca d'en Toni, and Roman remains. It has 9,404 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Church of Sant Genís de Vilassar
Monument
Parish church of Vilassar de Dalt, documented since 1118 and completely rebuilt between 1511 and 1519 in late Gothic style. Burned in 1936 and demolished in 1941, it was rebuilt again in 1943 to the plans of Antoni Fisas, with a facade of marked Italianate classicism, a central nave with two side aisles and a small transept. It preserves from the earlier temple the 16th-century side portal, carved in stone with semicircular archivolts and an angel sculpted above the keystone. It is protected as a cultural asset of local interest.
