What to see and do in Teià

Teià
Village
Teià is a wine-growing municipality in the interior of the Maresme, near Alella, located in a small valley at the foot of the Litoral mountain range and traditionally a summer resort for Barcelona families. The remains of the Vallmora site confirm that, in Roman times, it was one of the main wine-production centres near Roman Barcino; the oldest document mentioning it, from 958, records the sale of a vineyard under the place name Vila Taliano, the origin of the current name. After phylloxera, the traditional vines were replaced with American rootstock. The parish church, in Gothic-Renaissance style, was built in 1574 by master builder Antoni Mateu; its altarpiece, with paintings by Lluís Gaudín on the life of Saint Martin, was lost during the Civil War.
Church of Sant Martí de Teià
Monument
The church of Sant Martí de Teià, included in Catalonia's Inventory of Architectural Heritage, gives its name to the village of Taliano, already documented in 961; the church is first mentioned four years later, when it was donated to the see of Barcelona. Rebuilt almost entirely from 1574 under master builder Antoni Mateu, it has a single nave with ribbed vaulting and a square bell tower topped with triangular battlements. The facade combines a Renaissance portal of Montjuïc stone, with a relief of Saint Martin on horseback dividing his cloak, and a flamboyant Gothic window added later. Inside is preserved an altarpiece with early 17th-century paintings by Lluís Gaudín, along with chapels with ribbed vaulting and a triforium.
The Cella Vinaria of Vallmora
Historical milestone
The archaeological site of the Vallmora plain, known in Latin as the Cella Vinaria, is the only Roman winemaking centre turned into a museum in Catalonia, and it was active between the 1st century BC and the 5th century AD, with treading floors, beam presses and fermentation vats that produced wines exported in amphorae across the western Mediterranean. The excavations of 2003 and 2004 brought to light a lead seal with a Latin inscription mentioning a slave named Epictetus, who later, as a freedman, rose to the post of sevir augustalis in Roman Barcino; the original seal is kept at the Museum of Wine Cultures in Vilafranca del Penedès. Since 2009 the site has had a wine-tourism and archaeology centre for visitors.
The stuffed apple of Teià
Food and drink
Apple candied and filled with minced meat, a dish for special days in the calendar of the village. Like the stuffed pears of the neighbouring districts, it belongs to the Catalan tradition of mixing fruit and meat at the festive table.
