What to see and do in Vilassar de Mar

Vilassar de Mar
Village
Vilassar de Mar is a town in the Maresme comarca, in the province of Barcelona, with 21,227 inhabitants, known for flower-growing and for the Festa Major de Sant Joan. It was traditionally a fishing village, and many of its fishermen sought their fortune in America, especially in Cuba; it had a school of Navigation, and those who returned wealthy built the distinctive houses that can still be seen today. At the end of the 14th century the settlement was no more than a group of fishermen's huts under the jurisdiction of Vilassar castle; in the 15th century, for fear of pirates, three families fortified their farmhouses with defence towers, which were later depicted on the municipality's coat of arms. In the 1720s the construction of the church of Saint John began.
Church of Sant Joan de Vilassar de Mar
Monument
Parish church of Vilassar de Mar dedicated to Sant Joan, formed by a central nave and two lower side aisles separated by columns with Corinthian capitals, a transept and a dome over the crossing. Its interior preserves neo-Baroque altarpieces by Josep Obiols, Enric Monserdà, Joan Commeleran and Jordi Vila Rufas, and a post-Romantic organ built in 1936 by Gaietà Estadella. The main portal, with a niche for the image of the patron saint, and the octagonal bell tower are the only preserved parts of the 18th-century temple; the current building was built entirely anew in the 20th century. Vilassar de Mar was traditionally a fishing village, many of whose inhabitants emigrated to Cuba.
Festival of Sant Joan de Vilassar de Mar
Activity
The festa major of Vilassar de Mar is held during the week of 24 June in honour of Sant Joan Baptista, patron saint of the town. The programme includes the arrival of the Canigou Flame, the Penjada de l'Ase Innocenci (hanging of the Innocenci donkey) from the bell tower, the arrival of the slave trader Pigat and Lucía, and the town's giants, as well as concerts, a gathering of giants and gralla players, a correfoc and matinades. It culminates with a procession from the Town Hall square to the church and a solemn mass; the following day the co-patron saints Sant Mansuet, Sant Reparat, Sant Innocenci and Santa Especiosa are honoured.
