What to see and do in Premià de Mar

Premià de Mar
Village
Premià de Mar, officially called San Cristóbal de Premiá until 1842, is the second most populous city in the Maresme after Mataró, with 29,431 inhabitants (INE 2025), located on the coastal strip between Vilassar de Mar and El Masnou, with almost no elevations. The earliest evidence of settlement in the municipality dates back to prehistory, with early Neolithic pottery remains found in the Plaça de la Sardana, dated to around 4500 BC. Beneath the present-day urban centre lies the Roman building of Can Ferrerons, with an octagonal floor plan and 735 square metres, the only known example of this layout in Catalonia; built in late Antiquity, it was declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (the highest level of cultural heritage protection in Catalonia) in 2014 and today houses the Museu Romà, open to the public since 2015.

The octagonal building of Can Ferrerons
Historical milestone
Beneath the urban centre a Roman construction of octagonal plan raised around the fourth century is preserved, linked to a villa devoted to wine. It is an uncommon plan in Hispania and today it is displayed as a museum and integrated into a modern building.
