What to see and do in el Masnou

El Masnou
Village
El Masnou is a fishing town in the southern Maresme, in Barcelona, with 24,761 inhabitants (INE 2025), on the coastal strip between Premià de Mar and Montgat. It belonged to Sant Feliu d'Alella and Sant Martí de Teià, villages set back from the coast to protect themselves from pirates, until it became independent in 1825, later incorporating the districts of Ocata and Alella del Mar. Its population lived from farming and fishing, and it even had its own shipyards, where large sailing ships and fishing boats were built. Alfonso XIII granted it the titles of Vila Benèfica, in 1902, for a poorhouse, and Il·lustríssima Vila, in 1909, for the Ocata National School. It was also a summer resort for the Catalan upper bourgeoisie, who left their mark on 19th- and 20th-century villas and towers.
Wayside Cross of el Masnou
Monument
A Gothic-style wayside cross, carved in stone, with an octagonal base and shaft, preserved inside the municipal cemetery of El Masnou (Maresme). It is about three metres high and consists of three parts: the base, with the inscription "Anno Christi MD" (year 1500); the shaft, surrounded by anthropomorphic reliefs framed in Gothic niches depicting eight saints no longer identifiable today; and the upper cross, with Christ crucified over a skull on one face and the Virgin and Child on the other. The architect Miquel Garriga i Roca designed the base and the landscaped surroundings, where commemorative plaques were placed to the people of El Masnou who fell in various wars. It is of a similar type to the crosses of Can Llaurador in Teià and of Alella.
The secession of el Masnou
Historical milestone
The fishermen's quarter situated at the foot of the coast separated from Teià in 1825 and constituted itself as a municipality of its own. The independence recognised the weight of a population of shipowners, captains and shipwrights turned towards the sea.
