What to see and do in Cabrera de Mar

Cabrera de Mar
Village
Cabrera de Mar is a municipality in the Maresme, in the province of Barcelona, situated in a small coastal valley between the Burriac and Montcabrer hills. In Roman times, the area was home to Iluro, capital of the Laietani and of ancient Laietania, before the city moved to the site of present-day Mataró; on its remains, the castle of Sant Vicenç was built in the 11th century, enlarged in the 12th and 13th centuries and renamed Burriac castle in the 14th century through inheritance. Beside it lies the Iberian settlement of Burriac, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Maresme. The municipality, with a population scattered across settlements such as Agell, Sant Joan de Munt and Mas Terrillo, is crossed by the Cabrera, Agell and Argentona streams, the latter forming the boundary with Mataró. It has 5,045 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Burriac
Monument
Burriac Castle, also called the Castle of San Vicente, crowns the Burriac hill, at 401 metres above sea level, between Cabrera de Mar and Argentona, above an ancient Iberian settlement. The site had earlier been an Iberian watchtower and, around the 2nd century BC, a small Roman fort that watched over the settlement of Ildure; from that period a cistern survives, later reused in the Middle Ages. The medieval castle was built on that fortification and is documented from 1017. Between the 12th and 13th centuries the keep, the storerooms and the chapel were built, and until 1313 it belonged to the Sant Vicenç family, from whom its other name comes; afterwards it passed to the Bosc or Desbosch family. It fell out of use around the 18th century and today belongs to the Cabrera de Mar Town Council.
Iberian Settlement of Burriac
Curiosity
The Iberian settlement of Burriac, located south of the hill of the same name, within the present-day Parc de la Serralada Litoral in Cabrera de Mar, is also known as Ilduro or Ilturo and was inhabited between the 6th and 1st centuries BC. Discovered in 1915 by the architect Lluís Bonet and excavated between 1924 and 1993, it was the capital of the Laietanian territory and, at about two hectares, the largest of the more than forty-five known Iberian settlements in Catalonia, protected by a belt of peripheral watch settlements. It was completely walled during the full Iberian period, between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, and reached its peak occupation in the 2nd century BC, before shrinking to a small nucleus by the mid-1st century BC. A stretch of the wall is still preserved, with a tower-gate that allowed the passage of carts.
Ilturo and the Iberian coinage of Burriac
Historical milestone
The Laietani settlement perched on the Cerro de Burriac, in Cabrera de Mar, was the mint that struck coins with the legend Ilturo between the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE. It controlled an agricultural territory devoted to wine and trade with Rome.
