What to see and do in Avià

Avià
Village
Avià is a municipality of 2,267 inhabitants, at an altitude of 677 metres and covering 27.24 km², which besides the town of the same name includes the settlements of Cal Rosal, Graugés, Obiols and La Plana; until the 1980s its economy was divided between farming, livestock raising, textiles and coal mining. Local tradition attributes its origin to a resettlement carried out by Wilfred the Hairy, recalled in the Catalan royal arms on its municipal coat of arms, approved in 1992, alongside the crozier and sword of its patron saint, Sant Martí, a bishop and soldier. It preserves the pre-Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç d'Obiols and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria d'Avià, as well as those of Sant Martí d'Avià and Sant Sadurní de Clará. The rally driver Marc Coma and the countertenor Xavier Sabata were born in the village.
Church of Sant Martí d'Avià
Monument
The church of San Martín de Avià, protected as a Bien Cultural de Interés Local, is the parish church of the municipality, in the Berguedà. The original church was consecrated in January 907 by Bishop Nantigís of la Seu d'Urgell, after being built by Count Guifré el Pelós; his son Miró el Joven had it consecrated as the church of the then-emerging town of Avià, around which the village grew. Of the pre-Romanesque and Romanesque temple, barely a worn capital survives, kept in a private house. The present building, with a single nave and side chapels, dates from the 18th century, with a bell tower of polished ashlar and an attached rectory that served as a Carlist barracks before the conde de España was taken prisoner there in 1839.
Graugés Pond
Nature
The Graugés ponds, near Berga, are a system of artificial reservoirs created between 1900 and 1909 by means of embankments, irrigation channels and water pumps to supply the Graugés agricultural colony, founded by Agustí Rosal i Sala. Together they cover 12.55 hectares at 596 metres altitude; the main pond amounts to about 7 hectares and its depth, originally about 18 metres, has now dropped to just over 6. Surrounded by riverside woodland of black poplars, willows and ash trees, they are one of the main attraction points for ducks and herons of the upper Llobregat basin, although they suffer from a slow silting process.
