Castle of Espinalbet Monument · Castellar del Riu, Berguedà, Barcelona Of the castle of Espinalbet only a few courses survive of what was a square-plan building, raised directly on the rock; it was probably a defensive tower controlling the Castellar del Riu sector, although it never attained the rank of a frontier castle. No remains of walls survive, since the stone was reused for neighbouring farmhouses and the rectory of Sant Vicenç, but the remains of an access stairway climbing to the top of the hill overlooking the valley do survive. Records of the castle are linked to the viscountal family of the Berguedà, and it is documented from 1187, when it appears in the will of the troubadour Guillem de Berguedà, who left it to his brother Berenguer.
