What to see and do in l'Espunyola

L'Espunyola
Village
L'Espunyola is a municipality of the Berguedà with 260 inhabitants, living from dry-land farming and livestock, amid Mediterranean forests of holm oaks and Aleppo pine, with oaks and pine groves in the higher areas. Its name comes from the Latin spongia (sponge), owing to the porous appearance of its rocks. The castle of l'Espunyola, at 727 metres above sea level, is already mentioned in 950, when the abbess Adelaida Bonafilla of Sant Joan de Ripoll donated it to her monastery; it was declared a cultural asset of national interest in 1949. It is not a rock castle but a fortified Romanesque palace, of which two towers survive along with the chapel of Sant Climent, from the 13th century, the patron saint recalled by the anchors on the municipal coat of arms. The village also preserves the Romanesque church of Santa Margarita de Mercadal.
Castle of l'Espunyola
Monument
The termenat castle of l'Espunyola, of medieval origin and Romanesque style, stands in the municipality of the same name, in the Berguedà, and gives its name to the village. It retains two towers and a chapel, today in ruins, dedicated to Saint Clement, dating from the 13th century; between the towers a manor house was built, already in the 16th-17th centuries. It is first mentioned in a document of the year 950, in which Countess Adelaide of Barcelona donates it to the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses, and by the 12th century it is already in the hands of a family that took the surname Espunyola. The municipality's official coat of arms depicts the old castle beside two anchors, an attribute of Saint Clement, patron of the village.
