What to see and do in Saldes

Saldes
Village
Saldes is a municipality in the Berguedà comarca, in the province of Barcelona, situated at the foot of the Pedraforca massif, within the Cadí-Moixeró natural park. It includes the hamlets of Maçaners and l'Espà and has 302 inhabitants. Its economy combines dry-land farming and former coal mining with mountain tourism. It preserves the Romanesque church of San Martín, with an image of the Mare de Déu del Gresolet, a restored castle and the ruins of the old monastery of San Sebastián de Sull. From the Gresolet viewpoint one can behold the Pedraforca, considered the sixth wonder of Catalonia.
Castle of Saldes
Monument
The castle of Saldes is a border castle of the municipality of Saldes (Berguedà), at the foot of the Pedraforca, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional. It stands next to the village of Saldes, on its north-eastern side, on a hill overlooking the valley. Today it is in ruins, though partly restored: what survives is a wall running along the hill, near the summit, with a wide perimeter marked by substantial walls, remains of buildings resting on the rock, and a small Romanesque chapel at one end, of which a two-storey nave survives, covered with a pointed stone vault, of irregular ashlar laid in squared courses.
Pedraforca
Nature
The Pedraforca is an emblematic mountain of Catalonia, located in the sierra del Cadí, within the Cadí-Moixeró natural park, on the boundary between the provinces of Barcelona and Lleida, in the Berguedà. Its name, from the Catalan words pedra and forca, “stone” and “fork”, alludes to its distinctive shape of two great peaks separated by a saddle, the Enforcadura: the northern one, with the Pollegó Superior at 2506 metres and the Calderer at 2505, and the southern one, with the Pollegó Inferior at 2445. The nearest villages are Gósol and Saldes, between whose municipalities the massif is divided. In 1982 it was declared a paratge natural d'interès nacional (natural site of national interest) by the Parliament of Catalonia, and its summit appears in the Repte dels 100 Cims of the Federation of Hiking Associations of Catalonia.
