What to see and do in Fígols

Fígols
Village
Fígols is a mining municipality of the Berguedà, in the province of Barcelona, with 40 inhabitants (INE 2025), located at the north-western end of the comarca and traditionally known as Fígols de Berga or, until 1989, Fígols de les Mines. Its district contains the settlement of Fumanya and the depopulated hamlet of Peguera. It lived from coal mining, recalled by the Museu de les Mines de Cercs, dedicated to the Fets de Fígols of 1932, the miners' uprising that demanded better conditions from the government of the Republic; it also has one of the few amber deposits in Spain. It preserves the Romanesque church of Santa Cecília. A mining municipality of the Berguedà with the castle of Peguera and the Fumanya ichnite site, it now lives from farming and livestock.
Castle of Peguera
Monument
The castle of Peguera is a frontier castle situated at the top of the Roc de Peguera, in the municipality of Fígols (Berguedà), at the foot of which lie the uninhabited houses of the hamlet of Peguera. Documented since the second half of the 11th century, when between 1068 and 1095 the castellan Pere Ramon swore fealty to the count of Cerdanya for Peguera, it passed in 1171 to the monastery of Poblet by donation of Pere de Berga, and in 1390 King John I sold its jurisdiction to Ramon de Peguera. Today only fragments of wall remain: it appears to have been a small castle, perhaps a simple tower, an outpost of the nearby castle of Fígols, whose stones were reused when it collapsed to build the houses of Peguera, a mining village abandoned around 1970.
Fumanya Dinosaur Footprints
Curiosity
One of the most important dinosaur ichnite sites in Europe, with close to 3,000 footprints and around 50 defined titanosaur trackways, as well as fossils of plants and invertebrates. They formed around 72 million years ago, during the Maastrichtian, at the foot of the Serra d'Ensija, at 1,550 metres altitude, between the municipalities of Fígols and Vallcebre (Berguedà). Lluís Viladrich and Montserrat Gorchs found them on 31 March 1985 in a marl quarry, and palaeontologists confirmed the discovery in October 1986. The Museu de les Mines de Cercs organises guided visits through the Fumanya Interpretation Centre, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 2014.
The Abandoned Village of Peguera
Curiosity
The abandoned village of Peguera stands at about 1,600 metres altitude, at the head of the Peguera valley, between the plains of Peguera to the south and the Serra d'Ensija to the north, in the municipality of Fígols. Above the houses rose the rock of Peguera, where stood the castle that from 1390 was the seat of the Barony of Peguera; the settlement also had the Romanesque church of Sant Miquel. The progressive closure of the Fígols mines caused the gradual abandonment of the village, today depopulated and with ruins still visible. Ramon Vila Capdevila, known as Caracremada, a leading figure of the anti-Francoist resistance, was born in Peguera in 1908.
The insurrection of the Alt Llobregat
Historical milestone
On 19 January 1932 the miners of Fígols took control of the village and proclaimed libertarian communism. The revolt spread through the neighbouring basins, was put down in a few days and ended with more than a hundred deported.
