What to see and do in Rubió

Rubió
Village
Rubió is a mountain municipality in the comarca of l'Anoia, on the border with el Bages, dominated by the rugged sierra de Rubió, which reaches 835 metres and preserves forested areas of white pine, oak and holm oak. In its term traces of human occupation have been found since the Eneolithic, including two megalithic tombs, now on the route of the dolmens of l'Anoia, and the remains of a Roman villa. In the early Middle Ages the sierra was divided among three castles, that of Rubió, that of Ardesa and that of Maçana, from the first of which the village takes its name. In 1841 the mozos de escuadra and the somatén of Rubió put an end, at the Pla de les Bruixes, to the bandits Marimon and Casulleres, who terrorised the peasants of the area.
Castle of Rubió
Monument
The castle of Rubió is a frontier castle located on a crag above the village, of which today the lower part of a circular tower with 11th-century ashlar blocks survives, along with remains of perimeter walls from a later extension, between the 12th and 18th centuries. Although it is believed to have been erected in the late 10th century, its first documentary mention dates from 1063 or 1069 according to the sources. It was governed in 1198 by Pedro de Bertran, of Rubió, and at the start of the 14th century it passed to the lineage of the Castellolí family; in 1380 Bernardo de Boixadors bought the jurisdiction from King Peter IV of Aragon, and his descendants, counts of Savallá and Perelada, kept the lordship until the end of the Ancien Régime. Around the castle a settlement formed that is now very small.
Sant Miquel Peak
Nature
Puig de Sant Miquel is a peak of 733 metres in the serra de les Maioles, in the municipality of Rubió (Anoia), included in the list of the 100 cims of the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya. Going down its southwest face is the church of Sant Pere d'Ardesa, restored by the town council after being in a semi-ruined state, next to which the vanished castle of Ardesa is believed to have stood, presiding over the former municipality of Sant Pere d'Ardesa. On the summit there is a geodesic marker and a nativity scene.
Trail of els Sepulcres Megalítics de l'Anoia
Activity
Waymarked route, in place since 1995, linking the four dolmens of l'Anoia, between Rubió, Argençola and la Llacuna.
Tomb of the Three Kings
Curiosity
The sepulcre dels Tres Reis is a megalithic dolmen located on the Serra de Rubió, on the boundary between Rubió and Prats de Rei (Anoia), beside an old transhumance route. Its funerary chamber, quadrangular and formed of five large slabs of local stone, was surrounded by a circular mound of earth and stones more than eight metres in diameter, now heavily eroded. Excavated in 1964 by a team from the Museu Arqueològic de Barcelona, it was found to have already been looted in ancient times, although human teeth and molars were recovered along with ceramic vessels and an awl, offerings from a multiple burial used around 1200 BC. Since ancient times it has served to mark the boundaries of Rubió, Prats de Rei and the vanished Castell de Maçana, from which its name may derive.
Tomb of les Malloles or Pedrafita
Curiosity
A wide-corridor megalithic tomb from the early Bronze Age, in the first centuries of the second millennium BC, located at the start of the Serra de Rubió. Excavations begun in 1996 found the remains of twelve adults, two young people and a child, together with personal items, ornaments and domestic utensils. A stone fragment was also recovered, possibly from the cover slab, with petroglyphic carvings of concentric circles.
Wildflower honey of the Anoia
Food and drink
Thousand-flower honey figures among the products with a name of their own in the comarca. The hives are installed on the plateaus and woods of the Alta Anoia, such as those of Rubió, and give a dense honey that is sold at fairs and markets of the area.
