What to see and do in Santa Clara de Avedillo

Santa Clara de Avedillo
Village
Santa Clara de Avedillo is a village of 153 inhabitants whose name may derive from a Jewish family, the Avedillo, who withdrew to Sanabria after the Arab invasion; the Inquisition placed 'Santa Clara' before the place name because of the existence of a convent of Poor Clares. Resettled in the Middle Ages by people of Jewish origin, on 10 April 1628 Philip IV created here the Viscounty of Santa Clara de Avedillo in favour of Francisco González de Andía Irarrazábal y Zárate, viceroy of Navarre and Sicily. On the El Otero hill, also known as La Parva and visible from almost the whole comarca, there was a pre-Roman sanctuary around which legends are woven. Its church of the Asunción, of Romanesque origin, holds a life-size crucifix from the 13th-14th centuries and four 16th-century Italian panels.

Monument
The Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with a belfry gable, holds a life-size crucified Christ of 2.10 metres dated between the 13th and 14th centuries, Italian Renaissance panel paintings and a Gothic Christ of the 16th century.

Nature
This hill, also called la Parva, preserves the remains of a pre-Roman sanctuary and, since 1990, a geodesic marker; local tradition has long attributed to it magical properties and powers over the weather.
Grilled meats in the Santa Clara wine cellars
Food and drink
Cocido, lentils with chorizo, beans and grilled meats are prepared in the cellars dug on the outskirts of the village, common throughout the place and turned into a collective dining room.
