Fuentespreadas
Village
Fuentespreadas is a village of 267 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, in the Tierra del Vino comarca, whose name comes from an old 'Fontibus Predatis' recorded in 1233 and which could be interpreted as 'ruined springs' or 'bad-tasting springs'; its residents are known as fuentesianos. In the Middle Ages the place was under the Order of St John of Jerusalem, which even kept a hospital there for pilgrims. Archaeological remains from every historical period have been found in its territory, among them the grave goods from the so-called tomb of Fuentespreadas, now on display at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid. Its church of San Cristóbal preserves a Romanesque apse and a coffered interior, with a 14th- or 15th-century crucifix with a skirt.
