Peleas de Abajo
Village
Peleas de Abajo is a village of 248 inhabitants located at 727 metres in the comarca of Tierra del Vino, 18 km from Zamora, on a hillside facing the valley, on whose slope its wine cellars sit. Its name, like that of neighbouring Peleas de Arriba, recalls the friction between Moors and Christians that for centuries separated the two banks of the Valparaíso stream; its inhabitants are known as peleínos. Resettled in the Middle Ages by the kings of León, the town remained under the control of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem until the 19th century, an order to which its church of la Asunción also belonged, of Romanesque origin and completed between the 15th and 16th centuries.
