What to see and do in Villanueva de Campeán

Villanueva de Campeán
Village
Villanueva de Campeán is a village in the province of Zamora crossed from north to south by the Roman road of the Vía de la Plata, on which it once had a hospital for pilgrims and today has a hostel. Its name recalls that it is a newly founded settlement, arising in the early 15th century after the founding of the Franciscan convent of Nuestra Señora del Soto, whose first inhabitants came largely from the vanished neighbouring village of San Pedro de Campeán. Documented as early as 1595 with 21 households, it was part of the Partido del Vino de Zamora during the Early Modern period. The Franciscan convent is preserved as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), included on the Red List of Heritage at Risk. It has 115 inhabitants.
