Cuelgamures
Village
Cuelgamures is a hamlet of 77 inhabitants in the Tierra del Vino comarca, in the province of Zamora. Its name, recorded as Colga Mures in a royal grant of 1143, would mean roosting place of bats, referring to some cave or wine cellar where these colonies took refuge. The municipal area preserves remains of a Roman villa with stretches of Roman road and the Neolithic site of the teso Moral. During the Middle Ages it was part of the Kingdom of León, and in the early modern period it belonged to the Partido del Vino of the province of Zamora. The village has numerous wine cellars dug into the rock, many of medieval origin, and its church of Santa María Magdalena holds a life-size Christ from the 14th or 15th century, as well as a 13th-century parish cross.
