What to see and do in Fermoselle

Fermoselle
Village
Fermoselle is a town in the province of Zamora, at the south-western edge of the comarca of Sayago, encircled by the Duero and Tormes rivers, which meet at the spot known as Las Dos Aguas; on the other side lie Portugal and the province of Salamanca. Built on a knife-edge of rock, it preserves the ruins of the castle of Doña Urraca and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Romanesque and Gothic, declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1974. Its slate arribes, terraced since ancient times, take advantage of the mild microclimate of the escarpment for vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees. The festivities of San Agustín have the bull as their protagonist, with encierros and bullfights enlivened by peñas. With 1,131 inhabitants, it forms part of the Arribes del Duero natural park.
The castle of Doña Urraca
Monument
In ruins, it crowns the highest point of the town looking out over the Duero; beneath its walls extends a quarter declared a historic-artistic site on 24 October 1974, at the confluence of the Duero with the Tormes.
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Fermoselle
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, in Fermoselle, dates back to the 13th century, when it was built in Romanesque style, although it has undergone numerous alterations that left their mark from each period. Notable features include its south and west portals, in a style transitional between Romanesque and Gothic with fine sculpted decoration, the porch opened on the south side in the 16th century, and the tower. Its original floor plan was altered in the 16th century, and in the 18th century its present form was completed with the vaulted roofs and the oval-based dome on pendentives over the transept. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) with the category of monument on 26 September 2013; alongside it stands the church of San Juan, Romanesque and remodelled in the 18th century as part of a Franciscan convent.
The cellars carved into the granite
Curiosity
Beneath the streets and the houses of the town opens a labyrinth of underground cellars dug into the granite rock, used to keep the wine and to gather to drink it during festival days.
The wine of the juan garcía grape
Food and drink
The wines of Fermoselle fall under the Arribes designation of origin and are made from the native juan garcía variety, also known as malvasía negra in some municipalities of Salamanca province, grown on the terraced plots of the Duero canyon. Almost impossible to find outside this area, it produces good young wines, crianzas and reservas, and is also used as a blending variety alongside other grapes from Castile and León and Galicia. It accounts for around 65% of the vineyard area in the Arribes, a proportion that in municipalities such as Fermoselle or Pereña reaches up to 90% of the land under cultivation.
The bull runs of San Agustín
Activity
The festivities of mid-August preserve bull-runnings documented since 1523; the other great day of the year is Whit Monday, when the pilgrimage festival of the Santa Cruz is held.
