Villar del Buey
Village
Villar del Buey is a municipality in the comarca of Sayago, in the south-west of the province of Zamora, on the border with Portugal and 44 kilometres from the provincial capital; it groups together the localities of Cibanal, Formariz, Fornillos de Fermoselle, Pasariegos and Pinilla de Fermoselle, and has 483 inhabitants. Part of its territory lies within the Arribes del Duero natural park, also protected by Unesco as the Meseta Ibérica transboundary biosphere reserve and by the European Union as a Natura 2000 site. The village preserves traditional Sayago houses, with flagstone floors and bell-shaped chimneys, and its church of Santa Marina, rebuilt in 1775, holds a crucifix from the early fourteenth century and mural paintings from the sixteenth century.
