What to see and do in Almendra

Almendra
Village
Almendra is a municipality in the province of Salamanca (Castile and León), in the comarca of Vitigudino, within the sub-comarca of La Ramajería, part of whose territory is included in the Arribes del Duero Nature Park. Already in the Iron Age, Vettone tribes settled here, leaving castros such as that of La Almendrina, where a granite votive altar dedicated to the god Silvanus was found. With around 129 inhabitants, this village lends its name to the Almendra dam, on the río Tormes, built six kilometres away, whose viewpoints offer panoramic views of the Arribes and whose road is the most heavily used in the area for travelling between Salamanca and Zamora. Its church keeps two pendones (traditional banners), its own and that of Almendrina, the neighbouring hamlet left submerged beneath the reservoir's waters.

Nature
The Almendra dam, also known as the Villarino hydroelectric plant, stands on the lower course of the río Tormes, 5 kilometres from the Salamanca town of Almendra and 7 from Cibanal in Zamora province, on the stretch known as the arribes of the Tormes, a deep gorge formed by the river's erosion. Built between 1963 and 1970, at 202 metres high it is the tallest dam in Spain; its reservoir, of 2,649 cubic hectometres, is the third largest by capacity in the country and has created an inland sea in the middle of the dry Charro farmland. It is part of the Saltos del Duero system, together with the Aldeadávila, Castro, Ricobayo, Saucelle and Villalcampo plants; from its viewpoints, beside the busiest road between Salamanca and Zamora, wide views of the arribes can be seen.
