Salce
Village
Salce is a hamlet in Zamora province, of 83 inhabitants, in the comarca of Sayago, between the Duero and Tormes rivers, whose name comes from the willow (sauce), like so many Sayago place names taken from trees: Carbellino from carballo, Luelmo from the elm, Almeida from the poplar. It preserves the traces of the castro of Salce, one of the earliest human settlements in the comarca, although it has also been suggested that its origin may lie in the abandoned village of San Juan, where arrowheads and a Roman stele dedicated to Cloutina were found. Repopulated in the Middle Ages, possibly by people from Galicia or northern Portugal, it came close to disappearing in the late 1960s after the construction of the Almendra dam.
The offering to the Virgen del Rosario
Activity
On the last Sunday of September the village makes its offering to the Virgen del Rosario, and on 4 December it celebrates Santa Bárbara; the stone bridge of 1527 over the Rivera de Suelgas still stands on the outskirts.
The church swallowed by the reservoir
Monument
In 1970 the waters of the Almendra reservoir flooded the final stretch of the Rivera de Suelgas and ruined the old church of San Miguel Arcángel, of the sixteenth century, recovered afterwards as a cultural space.
