What to see and do in Fariza

Fariza
Village
Fariza is a municipality in the comarca of Sayago, in the province of Zamora, separated from Portugal by the canyon of the Duero, with 487 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread across seven villages: Badilla, Cozcurrita, Fariza, Mámoles, Palazuelo de Sayago, Tudera and Zafara, over 90.45 km² of peneplain protected as the Meseta Ibérica transboundary biosphere reserve and the Arribes del Duero natural park. This area, of great scenic value, is home to birds such as the griffon vulture, black stork, peregrine falcon, Egyptian vulture, eagle owl and golden eagle. The ermita of the Virgen del Castillo crowns a castro overlooking the canyon, and on the first weekend of June the seven villages climb up together for the romería of the Pendones or Viriatos.

Monument
It stands on a pre-Roman castro looking out over the canyon of the Duero; up to it in June climb the banners of the pilgrimage festival of los Viriatos, the main festival of the seven villages that make up the municipality.

Nature
With ninety square kilometres and triple protection —UNESCO biosphere reserve, Natura 2000 Network and natural park—, the municipal district is one of the best places to see golden eagle, eagle owl and black stork.
