What to see and do in Villarino de los Aires

Villarino de los Aires
Village
Villarino de los Aires, known as "the gateway to Las Arribes", is a municipality in the province of Salamanca with about 727 inhabitants, located in the northwest of the province, on the border with Portugal and partly within the Arribes del Duero natural park. Its territory brings together, besides the main settlement, the neighbourhoods of La Rachita and Santa Catalina —built to house the workers and technicians of Iberduero, now Iberdrola, who worked at the hydroelectric power station— and the settlements of Cabeza de Framontanos, Las Cañadas and La Zarza de Don Beltrán. The Villarino power station, the second most powerful in Spain, brings water from the Almendra reservoir through an underground conduit from fifteen kilometres away and returns it to the bed of the Duero.
The phylloxera and the Villarino Club of Havana
Historical milestone
Around 1890 phylloxera devastated the vineyards and pushed hundreds of residents to emigrate to Cuba. So many were they that in 1919 the emigrants founded in Havana the Club Villarino, one of the many societies of fellow countrymen that were born on the other side of the Atlantic.
