What to see and do in Pereña de la Ribera

Pereña de la Ribera
Village
Pereña de la Ribera, a village of about 300 inhabitants known as the balcony of the Arribes, sits in a granite, steep landscape of the Vitigudino district, with the town centre at 697 metres and the Duero cutting deep below, at the level of the Aldeadávila dam. On its boundary with Masueco lies the Pozo de los Humos, an imposing waterfall that owes its name to the effect of the foaming water as it falls, especially visible in spring, and one of the most attractive spots in the Arribes del Duero natural park. Its church of Santa María, from the 16th century, was directed by the Biscayan stonemason Pedro de Lanestosa, and every 14 May it climbs in pilgrimage to the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, from where the river is overlooked.

Nature
The cliffs of the Duero host one of the greatest concentrations of cliff-nesting raptors in the peninsula: some 550 pairs of griffon vulture and 75 of Egyptian vulture recorded in 2005, and a score of pairs of black stork, 8% of the Spanish population.
