What to see and do in Villalar de los Comuneros

Villalar de los Comuneros
Village
Villalar de los Comuneros is a village of 469 inhabitants in the Tierra del Vino comarca, province of Valladolid, beside the river Hornija. In its fields, at the spot known as Puente de Fierros, the Comuneros of Castile were defeated on 23 April 1521: led by Juan de Padilla, they were retreating from Torrelobatón towards Toro when they were overtaken by the army of Charles V; their leaders, Padilla, Juan Bravo and Francisco Maldonado, were executed the next day in the village square and their heads displayed on the rollo. Two monoliths, one in the square and the other at the site of the battle, commemorate the events, and every 23 April the festival of Castilla y León is held here. Its church of San Juan Bautista is a hall-church of brick and rammed earth.
The battle of Villalar
Historical milestone
On 23 April 1521, at the site of the Puente de Fierros, the battle was fought that ended the Comunero revolt; Juan de Padilla, Juan Bravo and Francisco Maldonado were executed the following day in the square. The royalist troops of Charles I, commanded by the constable Íñigo Fernández de Velasco, confronted the Comunero army of the Santa Junta near Villalar; the rebels had set out before dawn from Torrelobatón toward Toro in heavy rain, seeking reinforcements and supplies. The defeat put an almost complete end to the war of the Comunidades of Castile, except in Toledo, where resistance continued until February 1522. Every 23 April, Villalar commemorates the festival of Castile and León.
Castilla y León Day
Activity
Every 23 April the town holds the celebration of the Día de Castilla y León, the official holiday of the autonomous community since Ley 3/1986 established it, which turns this municipality of 469 inhabitants into the symbolic centre of the region. The date commemorates the battle that on that same day in 1521 sealed the defeat of the Comunidades of Castile, with the beheading of its three leaders, Padilla, Bravo and Maldonado. The autonomy statute of Castile and León itself, approved in 1983, had already designated 23 April as the community's holiday.
The two parish churches of Villalar
Monument
San Juan Bautista, raised between the 16th and 17th centuries with three naves of equal height and Neoclassical lines, and Santa María, of stone and brick and today a cultural centre, share out the village's religious heritage.
