The battle of Villalar Historical milestone · Villalar de los Comuneros, Tierra del Vino, Valladolid Image of Villalar de los Comuneros, not of the place itself. On 23 April 1521, at the site of the Puente de Fierros, the battle was fought that ended the Comunero revolt; Juan de Padilla, Juan Bravo and Francisco Maldonado were executed the following day in the square. The royalist troops of Charles I, commanded by the constable Íñigo Fernández de Velasco, confronted the Comunero army of the Santa Junta near Villalar; the rebels had set out before dawn from Torrelobatón toward Toro in heavy rain, seeking reinforcements and supplies. The defeat put an almost complete end to the war of the Comunidades of Castile, except in Toledo, where resistance continued until February 1522. Every 23 April, Villalar commemorates the festival of Castile and León. 23 de abril de 1521 Photo: Metacastellano (Public domain) What to see and do in Villalar de los Comuneros
