What to see and do in Fombellida

Fombellida
Village
Fombellida is a village of 169 inhabitants in the Esgueva valley, in the province of Valladolid, on the right bank of the river, at the foot of the plateau, where the slope levels out; its name recalls an old Fonte Bellida, 'beautiful spring'. In the late 16th century, under the name Fuentevellida, it belonged to the province of Palencia. Its Gothic church of San Antolín, from the end of that century, is covered with ribbed vaults — that of the main chapel star-shaped — and preserves altarpieces from the 16th to the 18th century and a gilded silver cross from the first quarter of the 16th century with Gothic ornamentation. On Pentecost Sunday, after a novena in the church, the townspeople climb in procession to the chapel of Santo Cristo del Amparo, organised into local brotherhoods, to honour their patron.

Monument
A Gothic church of the end of the sixteenth century, of ashlar and a single nave with ribbed vaults; the main chapel is covered with a star vault and opens onto the presbytery by means of a round triumphal arch.

Curiosity
San Antolín preserves a processional cross of silver gilt of the beginning of the sixteenth century, covered with Gothic ornamentation: a piece of silverwork of unexpected quality in a village that never went beyond three hundred residents.

Nature
The village's name comes from a Fonte Bellida, the beautiful spring that flowed at the foot of the moorland. Madoz described it in the nineteenth century as set in the valley of the Esgueva, on the right bank of the river, with eighty houses.
