What to see and do in Castroverde de Cerrato

Castroverde de Cerrato
Village
Castroverde de Cerrato is a village of 192 inhabitants perched on a hill in the Esgueva valley, in the Valladolid comarca of El Cerrato; its name alludes to an old Celtiberian hillfort or to the Castillo Verde built there in the Middle Ages to defend the north of the Duero from attacks by Al-Andalus. In the late Middle Ages it was the administrative capital of the Merindad de Cerrato, with jurisdiction over eight hamlets, and in the 16th century head of the Concejo de Castroverde, which also grouped together Villaco, Fombellida and Torre de Esgueva until the mid-18th century. From the hill remain the ruins of a castle and the Santa Clara arch, part of its medieval walls, and its church of the Assumption is a neoclassical ashlar building raised in 1807.
The arch of Santa Clara
Monument
On the Cotarro de la Villa, above the houses, stands the arch of Santa Clara, the visible remnant of the medieval fortifications that defended the castle of Castroverde; around it the foundations of the ruined enclosure show through.
The hemp-seed cakes
Food and drink
A Carnival sweet prepared by cooking honey with hemp seeds in copper cauldrons; the mixture is poured onto paper and left to cool until it forms hard rectangles that are broken with the teeth, with a flavour between toasted and honeyed.
Castroverde in the Becerro de las Behetrías
Historical milestone
The Becerro de las Behetrías de Castilla, drawn up in 1351, records Castroverde within the Merindad of the Cerrato; in the sixteenth century the place headed a council on which Villaco, Fombellida and Torre de Esgueva depended.
