What to see and do in Villaco

Villaco
Village
Villaco is a hamlet of 72 inhabitants in the Esgueva river valley, in the province of Valladolid, 41 kilometres from the capital, among the municipal areas of Torre de Esgueva, Castroverde de Cerrato, Valbuena de Duero and Amusquillo; it is also known as Villaco de Esgueva. In the mid-19th century it had 326 inhabitants, according to Madoz's dictionary. Its Gothic church of San Sebastián, from the 16th century, has a single four-bay nave with groin vaults and holds an excellent gilded silver parish cross from the early part of that century, with a Christ on the front and the Saviour on the back. The village also preserves the chapel of Cristo del Humilladero, in stone with a semicircular arch, and celebrates San Sebastián on 20 January.

Monument
A sixteenth-century Gothic church with a single nave of four bays covered by groin vaults; the main chapel displays ribbed vaulting with tiercerons and liernes, the most elaborate solution of the religious architecture of the valley.

Curiosity
The parish church keeps a processional cross of silver gilt of the beginning of the sixteenth century, with the image of Christ on the front and that of the Saviour on the back; a treasure out of all proportion for a village of seventy inhabitants.

Nature
At 793 metres of altitude, the Fuente del Olmo forms a small natural waterfall that falls from the rock of the moorland; around it there are picnic areas and a viewpoint that takes in the whole valley of the Esgueva at a glance.
