What to see and do in Amusquillo

Amusquillo
Village
Amusquillo is a hamlet of 95 inhabitants in the middle stretch of the Esgueva valley, province of Valladolid, between Villafuerte and Villaco. In the mid-19th century Madoz recorded 200 inhabitants, double today's figure. Its most important building is the church of San Esteban Protomártir, from the 13th century, built on the foundations of an old fortress of the ancient Oroca, with groin vaults and plasterwork in the central nave; it holds a wooden altarpiece polychromed in white and gold that tradition, unconfirmed, attributes to Gregorio Fernández. Next to the church stands a stone block shaped like a battlement, the remains of a fortress, which today serves as a viewpoint over the valley. The patronal festival is San Isidro, on 15 May.
The church of San Esteban Protomártir de Amusquillo
Monument
Raised in the thirteenth century on the foundations of an old fortress, it covers the central nave with ribbed vaults adorned with plasterwork and tops the chevet with ribs; its tower repeats the same ashlar work as the body of the church.
The altarpiece that Renedo sold to Amusquillo
Historical milestone
In 1751 the parish of Renedo de Esgueva sold its main altarpiece to the church of San Esteban for 2,500 reales. The piece, of wood polychromed in white and gold with groups in high relief, was attributed to Gregorio Fernández, although research points to Pedro de Guadalupe.
The brackish springs of Amusquillo
Nature
The municipal district, at 776 metres on the middle course of the Esgueva, is dotted with springs of brackish water that surface at the foot of the slope; beside the church, a stone block in the manner of a merlon serves today as a viewpoint over the valley.
The crayfish and eels of the Esgueva
Food and drink
Madoz's dictionary praised in the middle of the nineteenth century the crayfish fished here, above all in September, and the eels of the Esgueva, to which it attributed a better taste than those of larger rivers; the crayfish is still in the recipe book of the valley.
