What to see and do in Encinas de Esgueva

Encinas de Esgueva
Village
Encinas de Esgueva is a village in the province of Valladolid, in the Esgueva river valley, on the boundary with the provinces of Palencia and Burgos. Its origins go back to a Vaccean settlement founded around 2200 BC; the present-day village arose from the 9th-century resettlement, and the first documentary mention, from the 11th century, refers to a border fortress between Castile and León. Under seigneurial jurisdiction, in 1394 the Duke of Béjar, Diego López de Zúñiga, began building the ashlar castle that survives, square in plan with corner towers, a barbican and a moat, inherited in 1575 by the House of Aguilar; its corners bear the coats of arms of both families, and in the 20th century it served as a grain silo. It has 214 inhabitants.
The castle of the Zúñiga family of Encinas
Monument
Diego López de Zúñiga, Duke of Béjar, began in 1394 the fortress that is preserved today: an inner enclosure, a sloping barbican and a moat crossed by a drawbridge, all in ashlar of good stonework and almost without decoration.
The Gothic church of San Mamés
Monument
A Gothic church of the end of the fifteenth century and beginning of the sixteenth, of three naves, dedicated to San Mamés. Inside, a Plateresque altarpiece and several sixteenth-century painted panels preserved in the chapels stand out.
The old Jewish quarter of Encinas
Curiosity
Beneath the castle the layout of the old Jewish quarter can still be made out, a handful of narrow streets and tightly packed houses that recall the Hebrew community that lived in this frontier villa of the valley of the Esgueva.
