What to see and do in Canillas de Esgueva

Canillas de Esgueva
Village
Canillas de Esgueva is a village of 71 inhabitants in the province of Valladolid, set on the slope of a hill overlooking the valley of the river Esgueva, the second river to cross the province. Its founding goes back to the late 9th century, when the Esgueva marked the frontier between Christian and Muslim territories. Atop the hill stand the ruins of its castle, from the late 15th or early 16th century, of which a stretch of wall survived until 1970 and only two towers remain today. The church of San Miguel preserves a rural Romanesque apse from the 12th or 13th century decorated with corbels, a vault and a Rococo main altarpiece from the 18th century, and a Neoclassical tower from around 1800. The economy rests on the farming of barley, sugar beet, wheat and grapes.
The Romanesque apse of San Miguel de Canillas
Monument
The chevet of the parish church preserves an apse of rural Romanesque of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries decorated with corbels. The remodellings of the eighteenth added a Rococo altarpiece and, around 1800, a bell tower of Neoclassical lines.
The fallen towers of the castle of Canillas
Curiosity
On the hill that dominates the houses remain the remnants of a fortress of the end of the fifteenth or beginning of the sixteenth century. Around 1970 one of its wall stretches collapsed and today only the bases of two towers hold up.
The wine presses and cellars of Canillas
Food and drink
Canillas preserves wine presses and cellars dug into the hillside, grouped in underground quarters ventilated by stone chimneys. They recall when the vine lived alongside cereal, anise and beet in the lands of the valley.
The resettlement on the Esgueva frontier
Historical milestone
The place was settled at the end of the ninth century, when the course of the Esgueva marked the frontier between the Christian and the Muslim territories; that condition of borderland explains the chain of castles that marks the valley as far as Encinas.
