What to see and do in Torre de Esgueva

Torre de Esgueva
Village
Torre de Esgueva is a hamlet of the Páramos del Esgueva, in Valladolid, whose original name was simply Torre and which took on various surnames -Torre de Castroverde, Torre Fuembellida, Torrefombellida- before settling on its current one after the 1916 reform. In the 16th century it formed, together with Villaco and Fombellida, a joint community centred on Castroverde de Cerrato, from which it broke away in the mid-18th century, after paying taxes for more than a century to the marquis of Aguilafuente. Its church, from the late 12th and early 13th centuries, retains a semicircular apse with buttresses; it is dedicated to San Martín de Tours and displays a Herrerian bell-gable, a 16th-century parish cross and the monolithic crosses of its old calvary. It has 60 inhabitants.

Monument
The Romanesque chevet of San Martín de Tours is of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, with a semicircular apse and a Latin-cross plan; between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries a Herrerian bell gable of grandiose and harmonious proportions was added to it.

Curiosity
The village preserves several monolithic crosses of the sixteenth century, among them the parish cross and the calvaries that marked the road to the cemetery, considered genuine jewels of the popular sculpture of the valley.
The tarusa championship of San Isidro
Activity
On 15 May, the feast of San Isidro Labrador, the village organises its tarusa championship, a traditional game of throwing metal quoits at a stick with coins that still pits the gangs of the valley against each other.

Historical milestone
In 1916, in the reform of the municipal gazetteer, the locality came to be called officially Torre de Esgueva. Before that it had managed to emancipate itself from the council of Castroverde in 1820 and was incorporated into the province of Valladolid in 1833.
