Hérmedes de Cerrato
Village
Hérmedes de Cerrato is a hamlet in Palencia with about seventy-five inhabitants, on the slope of the valley of the Maderón stream, in the district of El Cerrato; in 1900 it had 724 inhabitants. Its name comes from the Latin eremitae, "hermit". In the late 9th century, under Alfonso III the Great, the district, recently reconquered from the Muslims, was resettled by people from the north of the peninsula as well as Mozarabs. In the 10th century the Mozarabic hermitage of the Virgen de la Era was built, declared a monument in 1931, and in the 11th the Abadía de Hérmedes was founded, with its own abbot at the cathedral of Palencia. Until the mid-20th century the Cañada Real Burgalesa, a resting place for transhumant shepherds, passed through here. Beside the village grows the Mata Fombellida holm oak, which is nearly four centuries old.
