What to see and do in Cabezón de Pisuerga

Cabezón de Pisuerga
Village
Cabezón de Pisuerga is a town of 3910 inhabitants split in two by the Pisuerga river, beneath the Altamira hill, 18 kilometres from Valladolid. From Roman times it preserves remains of the villa of Santa Cruz, with a mosaic and abundant archaeological material; of the medieval castle that once stood on the hill only vestiges remain. In 1556 Charles V passed through here to meet his grandson Carlos de Austria, and it was also visited by Philip II and Maria Luisa Gabriela of Savoy. On 12 June 1808 a Castilian militia of about 5000 men was defeated in the village by the cavalry of General Lasalle. Its bridge, of Roman origin and rebuilt in the 17th century, has four pointed arches, and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción preserves a 13th-century carving of the Virgen del Manzano.
The bridge of Cabezón
Monument
Nine arches, four pointed and five round, on rounded and polygonal piers. Of Roman origin, it was rebuilt in medieval times and remodelled again in the seventeenth century; it is still the image of the village.
Church of la Asunción de Cabezón
Monument
Raised at the beginning of the sixteenth century and remodelled in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it keeps a Baroque organ by the organ builder Francisco Ortega Pérez and a carving of the Virgen del Manzano dated to the thirteenth century.
The slopes of the Pisuerga at Cabezón
Nature
The municipality covers a height difference from 690 to 860 metres between the plain of the river and the moorlands that close it in. Those slopes of clay and limestone separate the irrigated land of the riverbank from the dry cereal farming above.
The National Folklore Festival of San José Obrero
Activity
On 1 May, with the feast of San José Obrero, the municipality hosts a folklore festival that brings together traditional dance groups from different regions in the square and around the bridge.
The battle of Cabezón
Historical milestone
The Battle of Cabezón was fought on 12 June 1808 by the bridge over the Pisuerga at Cabezón de Pisuerga, near Valladolid, in one of the first clashes of the Peninsular War, when Captain General García de la Cuesta tried to cut communications between Madrid and Irun after the uprising of 2 May. A Castilian militia of about 4,700 poorly armed and untrained men, reinforced by 300 regular horsemen and 4 pieces of artillery, was routed by the cavalry of the French general Lasalle, at the head of a detachment of about 9,000 men from Marshal Bessières's corps advancing from Burgos after occupying Torquemada and Palencia.
The meeting of Carlos V with his grandson
Historical milestone
In 1556, on his way into retirement at Yuste, Emperor Carlos V stopped in Cabezón de Pisuerga to meet his grandson, the future Don Carlos; the bridge over the Pisuerga made the place an obligatory crossing point for the court heading north.
