What to see and do in Cigales

Cigales
Village
Cigales is a town of 5.454 inhabitants in the Campiña del Pisuerga (Valladolid), thirteen kilometres from the provincial capital and head of the comarca. With a strong winemaking tradition, it is the main town of the Cigales designation of origin, which groups thirteen municipalities and obtained that status in 1991. Its municipal area, of 61 km², extends between the Montes Torozos and the Pisuerga river; the town stands at 745 metres. It was there that Mary of Habsburg retired at the end of her life, daughter of Philip the Handsome and sister of the emperor Charles V, queen consort of Hungary and governor of the Netherlands for twenty-four years, where she died in 1558. The historic centre, formerly walled, is organised around the plaza Mayor, with the church of Santiago and the old hospital of San Juan Evangelista.
