What to see and do in Corcos del Valle

Corcos del Valle
Village
Corcos del Valle is a village in the comarca of the Campiña del Pisuerga, in the province of Valladolid, situated by the Prado stream at 788 metres above sea level, between gentle hills and the foothills of the Montes Torozos; the Pisuerga river separates it from San Martín de Valvení. It has 203 inhabitants and was called Corcos or Cohorcos until the 1916 nomenclature reform. Its vineyards fall under the Cigales Designation of Origin. In its municipal area stands the monastery of Palazuelos, a Cistercian abbey founded in the 13th century and remodelled in the 16th with Renaissance additions attributed to the Cantabrian master Juan de Nates; abandoned after Mendizábal's disentailment, only its abbey church survives, recently restored.
Monastery of Santa María de Palazuelos
Monument
The monastery of Santa María de Palazuelos, a Cistercian house founded by Alfonso Téllez de Meneses in the first third of the 13th century beside the Pisuerga river, between Corcos del Valle and Cabezón de Pisuerga, became the head of the Cistercian order in Castile, and its altar was consecrated in 1226. Of the three-nave church with semicircular apses, straddling Romanesque and Gothic styles, only the consolidated ruins of the church survive today, with capitals carved with sirens and dragons. A historic-artistic monument since 1931, it suffered the collapse of its roofs and a pillar in 1998, which led the Junta de Castilla y León to carry out emergency works; since 2012 a local association has been working, with support from the Diputación, on clearing the rubble and enhancing the site.
The hills and canal of Corcos
Nature
Its 42.55 square kilometres at 789 metres combine holm oak and gall oak woods of the moorland with the plain of the Pisuerga and the course of the Canal de Castilla, which for centuries drove the flour mills of the municipal district.
The wine of Corcos
Food and drink
The nineteenth-century census counted 536 households devoted to farming and to wine, an activity still covered by the Cigales designation and which left cellars dug into the slopes of the moorland.
