What to see and do in San Martín de Valvení

San Martín de Valvení
Village
San Martín de Valvení is a hamlet in the province of Valladolid, in the comarca of Campiña del Pisuerga, surrounded by hills and with a cold climate, as Pascual Madoz described it in the mid-19th century, when it had 90 houses and 77 residents and depended on the judicial district of Valoria la Buena. It now has 78 inhabitants. Its lands, watered by several springs, traditionally yielded cereals, potatoes, wine and pulses, and its hills of holm oak and oak sustained charcoal-burning and plaster-making. It preserves a castle, the church of San Salvador and the classicist humilladero of the Santo Cristo de la Gracia, a building probably from the 17th century of which only the façade remains, its stone lintelled doorway now joined to the cemetery wall.
Castle of San Martín de Valvení
Monument
The remains of the fortress dominate a municipal district of 58.66 square kilometres at 760 metres of altitude. In 1850 the place gathered ninety houses and seventy-seven households that lived on cereal, livestock and charcoal burning.
The Santo Cristo de la Gracia wayside shrine
Curiosity
This small seventeenth-century classicist hermitage was raised at the edge of the road as a wayside shrine, the place where the traveller uncovered his head on entering or leaving the village. It is the best kept building of the municipal district.
