What to see and do in Castronuevo de Esgueva

Castronuevo de Esgueva
Village
Castronuevo de Esgueva is a village in the Esgueva Valley, in the province of Valladolid, situated on the left bank of the river above an ancient castro that gives it its name. The Sendero Verde trail from Valladolid passes through its grounds, and together with the deteriorated Roman bridge and a new wooden bridge it offers a rest area for cyclists and walkers. With 412 inhabitants, it has a medical clinic, a shop, a pharmacy, a winery, a restaurant, a summer swimming pool, a library and a civic centre with a theatre. Its church, with three Gothic and Baroque naves built between the 15th and 17th centuries, preserves a 15th-century star vault in the main chapel and an 18th-century organ that is the centrepiece of the August Saturday concerts.
The church of Santa María de la Concepción
Monument
Built between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, it mixes Gothic and Baroque: barrel and ribbed vaults run through the naves and a fifteenth-century star vault covers one of the side chapels of the church.
The 18th-century organ of Castronuevo
Curiosity
The parish church keeps an eighteenth-century organ that still sounds: every August it becomes the instrument of a cycle of concerts that fills with music the church of a village of little more than two hundred inhabitants.
The Cañada Real Burgalesa as it passes through Castronuevo
Nature
Through the municipal district runs the Cañada Real Burgalesa, one of the great cattle ways of the Mesta; its course crosses the valley of the Esgueva at 753 metres of altitude and today serves as an ecological corridor and a path for walkers and cyclists.
The tanga game of the Visitación festivities
Activity
On 2 July, feast of the Visitation, the village revives the tanga, a traditional Castilian game of throwing quoits at a stick with coins on top, alongside the open-air dances that fill the square for several days.
