What to see and do in Villarmentero de Esgueva

Villarmentero de Esgueva
Village
Villarmentero de Esgueva is a hamlet of 99 inhabitants in Valladolid province, in the Esgueva valley, whose name means village of the cattleman. Already inhabited in Roman times, it is first mentioned in 1160, in the sale of an estate in exchange for a Moor valued at twelve maravedís. Its church of Santa Juliana, Gothic-Mudéjar with Romanesque overtones, was built in the 13th century; it covers the nave with a timber roof of rafters and ridge beam and holds panels influenced by the painting of Alonso Berruguete. A manorial village in the 18th century, dependent on a resident of Astorga, and a royal village in 1785, in 1825 it had 62 inhabitants who lived off grain, wine and sheep farming.
The Gothic-Mudéjar church of Santa Juliana
Monument
Built in the thirteenth century in Gothic-Mudéjar style, it lost its original tower in a collapse in the eighteenth century and it was replaced by a bell gable; it keeps the dedication to Santa Juliana, celebrated on 16 February.
The altarpieces of the Master of Manzanillo
Curiosity
Santa Juliana keeps two altarpieces with religious painting: one of the middle of the sixteenth century of Berruguete-like influence and another of the end of the fifteenth attributed to the so-called Master of Manzanillo, in a village of fewer than fifty inhabitants.
The dispute over the abandoned village of Polvoreda
Historical milestone
In 1779 Villarmentero went to law with neighbouring Castronuevo over the use of the abandoned settlement of Polvoreda, one of so many places of the valley abandoned in the Modern Age whose lands the surviving councils disputed.
