What to see and do in Santovenia de Pisuerga

Santovenia de Pisuerga
Village
Santovenia de Pisuerga, in the metropolitan area of Valladolid, owes its name to a derivation of Santa Eugenia: as early as 1092 the first written references mention the estate of Santa Eugenia, situated in the old county of Cabezón. It was called simply Santovenia until the 1916 municipal nomenclature reform, when it adopted its current name. With 4.762 inhabitants, it preserves the church of San Juan Bautista and the hermitage of Jesús Nazareno, and opens its festive calendar with Santa Águeda, on 5 February, before the main festival of San Juan, on 24 June, with its traditional bonfire, open-air dances and parade of floats and costumes; on the last weekend of August the San Juanín is also held, a popular gathering among neighbours.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Santovenia
Monument
The church of San Juan Bautista is the Catholic parish church of Santovenia de Pisuerga, in the province of Valladolid, and one of the two historic buildings in the municipality along with the hermitage of Jesús Nazareno; the municipality today has more than four thousand six hundred inhabitants, after having been an agricultural hamlet. It is a 16th-century church that follows typical Castilian sobriety: its construction began in 1545 and finished in 1616. Its tower stands out, built in brick, bringing a note of colour to the ensemble against the stone of the rest of the church.

Nature
The municipality extends at 692 metres over the low terrace of the river, one of the lowest points of the comarca. The first written references, of 1092, already speak of the district of Santa Eugenia in the county of Cabezón.
The hamlet of Santa Eugenia
Curiosity
The name of the municipality is a contraction of Santa Eugenia, the dedication that appears in the documents of 1092. Only in the reform of the gazetteer of 1916 did it come to be called Santovenia de Pisuerga.
