What to see and do in Mucientes

Mucientes
Village
Mucientes is a village of 690 inhabitants in the comarca of the Campiña del Pisuerga, province of Valladolid, built around a rise amid vineyards of the Cigales Designation of Origin, which it borders, and cereal lands. Human presence is attested from the Lower Palaeolithic, more than 100.000 years ago, and Roman road 27 once passed through here, of which remains survive of a villa occupied in the High and Late Imperial periods. In 1114 the counts Pedro and Elvira donated a chapel and three plots of the village, then called Muz-nentis, to the church of Santa María la Mayor de Valladolid, and its lordship later passed to the house of Castro. For Santa Águeda the women of the village appoint an honorary mayoress and take over the wine cellars and streets.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Mucientes
Monument
The church of San Pedro Apóstol in Mucientes (Valladolid) is a 16th-century Gothic church built in ashlar stone, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1991. It has a single nave, divided into two bays plus the crossing, with a polygonal chancel covered by a star-ribbed vault, while the nave is closed by a ribbed vault with tiercerons. It has two doorways, the main one in Herreran style flanked by Ionic columns, and a three-tiered tower in the same style. In the chancel is preserved the main altarpiece, a Rococo work of the 18th century by Pedro de Correa, together with a 16th-century Renaissance choir stall with sixteen seats. Its most valuable piece is a silver processional cross worked by Pedro de Ribadeo around 1510.
The wine cellar quarter of Mucientes
Curiosity
Three areas of underground cellars dug between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries occupy more than forty thousand square metres beneath the slopes of the village. Since 2004 a recovery project has been studying them and opening them to visitors.
The festival of the married couples
Activity
In March the village holds a day reserved for married couples, a complement to that of Santa Águeda on 5 February, which is run by the women. Both are among the most deep-rooted occasions of the calendar.
The Cortes of Mucientes
Historical milestone
In the village's fortress a Cortes met at which Felipe el Hermoso tried, without succeeding, to have Queen Juana declared unfit to reign. The castle is already documented in 1326.
